This part-time opportunity is at the Durham VA Medical Center (VAMC) providing psychological assessments of the VAMC Police Officer applicants and conducting annual assessments for current Police Officers.

Preemployment and annual medical examinations must include a psychological assessment of the applicant/officer’s emotional and mental stability by a psychiatrist or psychologist. Police officer duties include personal encounters with the mentally ill, irrational, or disturbed persons who must be handled with full control of force, and unimpeded judgment. Any emotional or mental condition that could cause the applicant/officer to be a hazard to others or self during stressful situations and physical altercations could disqualify the Police Officer. Psychological assessments are designed to determine an officer’s suitability to be issued a firearm. VA Handbook 0720 also requires the psychological assessment to comply with the regulations of the Office of Personnel Management (“OPM”) that set forth the procedures to be used by federal agencies in requiring medical examinations and in using such examinations for the basis of personnel decisions.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Psychological Tests: Administer standardized tests designed to measure various aspects of personality, cognitive abilities, and emotional functioning;
  • Clinical Interview: Conduct a structured interview to gather detailed information about an individual's psychological history, current mental state, and suitability for the role;
  • Behavioral Observations: Observe the individual's behavior during the interview and testing process, noting any signs of stress, anxiety, or other psychological issues that might impact their performance as a police officer;
  • Documentation: Provide documentation that addresses the content areas outlined in the VA templates provided in VA directives; and
  • Compliance with Standards: Be consistent with the psychological screening requirements standards set forth in VA Handbook 0720 and based on federal regulations (5 C.F.R. § 339.301).

Qualifications

Required

  • Be a licensed and registered psychologist or psychiatrist in the state of North Carolina meaning:
    • Psychiatrist: completed medical school and a residency in psychiatry and holds a medical degree (MD or DO) that allows them to diagnose and treat mental health conditions, including prescribing medications; or
    • Psychologist: completed a doctoral degree in psychology from a program that includes the equivalent of at least three years of full-time study. The program must be accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) or the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) and also include at least 3-semester or 5-quarter hours in each of the following areas:
      • Biological bases of behavior (physiological psychology, comparative psychology, neuropsychology, sensation and perception, psycho-pharmacology)
      • Cognitive-affective bases of behavior (cognition, memory, learning, thinking, motivation, emotion)
      • Social bases of behavior (social psychology, group processes, organizational and systems theory, cultural and ethnic bases, gender roles)
      • Individual differences (personality theory, human development, abnormal psychology)
      • at least a 1-year internship including 1,500 practice hours, with a minimum of 1-hour per week of face-to-face, individual supervision.
  • Have prior experience working with law enforcement personnel to understand the unique psychological demands of the VA Police Officer role;
  • Adhere to the standards and guidelines set forth by the VA, ensuring that the evaluations are thorough and consistent; and
  • Have experience with personality assessments and cognitive and emotional stability tests. Examples might include:
    • Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI): This is one of the most widely used personality tests in psychology. It assesses a range of psychological conditions and personality traits to determine suitability for law enforcement roles;
    • California Psychological Inventory (CPI): This test evaluates interpersonal behavior and social interaction that are crucial for police work;
    • Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire (16PF): This test measures a range of personality traits, including emotional stability, anxiety, and decision-making capabilities; and / or
    • Inwald Personality Inventory (IPI): Specifically designed for law enforcement, this test assesses personality traits and behaviors that are relevant to police work, such as stress tolerance and impulse control.

    • State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory (STAXI)
    • Hilson Safety Risk Inventory
    • Inwald Survey-2 (IS-2)
    • Inwald Survey-5 (IS-5)
    • Shipley Institute of Living Scale (SILS-2)
